How to completely annihilate a Pocket Wizard Plus II
How to completely annihilate a Pocket Wizard Plus II

A friend of mine, who shall remain nameless, recently borrowed one my Pocket Wizards. He might never ask me for a favour again. Poor guy forgot it on the roof of his truck after a shoot and pulled onto the highway. Then he heard something slide down the length of the roof and watched in [...]

Still talking about it
Still talking about it

It’s been almost a year since I was another tree in a forest of international media pointing cameras and pens at Will and Kate, er, I mean the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, during their stop in Calgary in July 2011. But if you talk to my extended family, you’d think it happened yesterday. I [...]

Kayak GoPro
Kayak GoPro

I’ve had my GoPro for more than a year, but I only recently bought the $35 suction-cup mount. Why on earth did I take so long on that?! My first chance to put it to the test was during an assignment at Harvie Passage, the area of the Bow River in Calgary known better as [...]

Frank Shufletoski retires
Frank Shufletoski retires

I was privileged to be able to tell the retirement story of my SAIT photojournalism instructor, Frank Shufletoski. I wrote the story, shot and cut the video, shot his portrait and put together a gallery of his favourite images. Here’s the Sun link to the online content Here’s what the page layout looked like in [...]

It was a good month
It was a good month

April 2012 was a fun month of shooting. Narrowing down my favourite photos was difficult because of the sheer variety. There was a provincial election, a night of boxing, a roller derby, a series of kid stories (they’ll be published in May), a science fair,  a comic expo (ever heard of Tank Girl?) and much more. [...]

ComicCon 2012
ComicCon 2012

It may not be Springfield’s BiMonSciFiCon, but the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo certainly shattered expectations this year. Here are some of my favourite photos from the event.

Pugilist pleasure
Pugilist pleasure

This is only the second time I’ve ever shot boxing. The main event was a Canadian heavyweight title bout, and it was a lot of fun. These are my favourite images:

Wildrose surprise
Wildrose surprise

It was my task to photograph the Wildrose Party in the provincial election on April 23. It was interesting. Pollsters and pundits long predicted they would end the 41-year reign of the PC’s. It didn’t happen. In the end, the Tories claimed a majority win with 61 seats, while the Wildrose group nabbed 17. It [...]

Science fair kids
Science fair kids

I had about an hour to shoot a big science fair the other day that featured about 650 entries. Here are some of my favourite images.

Here’s what I woke up to this morning
Here’s what I woke up to this morning

This is on Page 3 of the paper today. I didn’t think what I did was that big a deal, but the paper spotted an opportunity and took it. Funny stuff.

It’s a good story… a day late
It’s a good story… a day late

Today I shot a video for a story that happened yesterday. Unfortunately, a press release was misread, and we jumped on this piece later than was ideal. But the soldier featured in it was gracious and allowed reporter Katie Schneider and I into his home. It’s about Cpl. Barrett Fraser, who survived a horrible explosion [...]

Meeting Mr. Hockey
Meeting Mr. Hockey

This is why I love my job. When I started my shift today, I had no idea that I would meet and chat with Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe. It was like speaking to my grandfather. Photo by Jack Beker Photography

I recently spent half an hour with Mike Tyson, shooting video and stills during an interview by the Toronto Sun’s Steve Buffery. Here are the photos:

Fresh start
Fresh start

My website is undergoing a major renovation, thanks to the pending death of MobileMe and—by process of elimination—iWeb. It’s good for me. Having relied on iWeb for so long left me in the dark ages of website creation. This new site will be better. I hope. Stay tuned. It could take a bit.
